Route

In green you see the route I intend(ed) to take. I left the North Cape on April 12th, 2012. The actual route taken is marked in Blue and Red. Let’s hope there will be peace in all countries en-route (and in the rest of the world!)

UPDATE: ARRIVAL AT CAPE OF GOOD HOPE 15-03-2013 !!!

Schedule

I hope splitting the route up into different stages will distract me from thinking about the total distance still to go (a total of +- 22.000km).

Do I need to cheat?!

As a true believer in Renewable Energy I will try to avoid vehicles which directly burn fuel as much as I can. Unfortunately my bicycle is not much of a floating device giving me some trouble in crossing rivers, and sea-straits. I foresee some trouble cycling on these small stretches of the route:

1. The Øresund

Although there is a combination of a bridge and a tunnel between Sweden and Denmark they do not allow cyclists to pass through. Instead I hitched a ride on a sailing boat from Helsingborg to  Hornsbæk!

2. The Storebælt

Getting from the Danish island of Sjælland to Fugen I had to pretend to be a car to cross this bridge:

Instead of pretending to be a car I took the ferry to Renewable Energy Island Samsø. The CO2 emissions of the ferry were compensated by the wind-parks built in the sea around this island.

3. Aswan – Wadi Halfa

Unfortunately, the only way to travel from Aswan to Wadi Halfa is by boat. It’s not the most comfortable boatride I have ever had, but it was an experience not to forget!

4.  The border between Tanzania and Mozambique

To cross the river I hope to make use of this ferry

So already now I can say: yes, I will be cheating!
